The Encyclopedia Britannica The fifth edition, on which work started immediately after the fourth was finished in 1810, was completed in 20 volumes, dated 1815, and sold at a price of £36. After the first five volumes, which were supervised by Bonar, it was again edited by Millar and was brought out by Constable. On Bonar’s death in 1814, Constable bought his share in the third edition from his heirs for £4,500. Realizing the inadequacy of simply reprinting the fourth edition, Constable at once began planning supplementary volumes, which started to appear at the end of 1815, the year that the fifth edition was completed. . You are about to purchase the Second Edition of The Encyclopedia Britannica on DVD disk. This PDF eBook version contains nearly 10,000 pages and is a great value! (This is NOT an audio CD) This scan is superior to others on eBay due to its clarity, and it is also searchable and copy/pastable for easy navigation. Shipping is FREE. Not sure what an “eBook” is? See a thorough description at the end of this page. The Encyclopædia Britannica Second Edition (1777–1784) is a 10-volume reference work, an edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica. It was developed during the encyclopaedia’s earliest period as a two-man operation founded by Colin Macfarquhar and Andrew Bell, in Edinburgh, Scotland, and was sold unbound in subscription format over a period of 7 years. Most of the medical and scientific articles, as well as the minor articles, were written by James Tytler. All copperplates were created by Bell. Vol 1. A 1778; Vol 2. A-B 1778; Vol 3. C 1778; Vol 4. D-F 1779; Vol 5. G-J 1780; Vol 6. K-L 1780; Vol 7. M-O 1781; Vol 8. O-P 1781; Vol 9. P-S 1782; Vol 10. S-Z 1783, with a 204-page appendix, 1784. After the success of the first edition, the second was a more ambitious project, with the addition of history and biography articles. The second edition is especially interesting to the American reader, as it was written during the course of the American Revolutionary War. Volume 1 was written when New York City was occupied by the British Army, and the course of the war was still quite undecided. Volume 10 was written the year after Cornwallis capitulated and sovereignty was recognized. In the article Colonies, page 2072-2080 Tytler goes into great detail about the British colonies in America and the causes of the revolution, and treats it with an unsympathetic yet neutral, scholarly viewpoint. “Because several of the colonies had claimed the sole and exclusive right of imposing taxes upon themselves, the statute 6 Geo. III. c. 12 expressly declares, that all his Majesty’s colonies in America, have been, are, and of right ought to be, subordinate to and dependent upon the imperial crown and parliament of Great Britain; who have full power and authority to make laws and statutes of sufficient validity to bind the colonies and people of America, subjects to the crown of Great Britain in all cases whatsoever. And the attempting to enforce this by other acts of Parliament, penalties, and at last by military power, gave rise, as is well known, to the present revolt of our colonies.” Volumes written early, such as volume 2 in the article Boston, where mention is made of “the present American war,” and volume 4 in the article New England (under E for England), have these places described as British colonies. In volume 10, written at the end of the war, the article Virginia describes it as “Late one of the British colonies, now one of the United States of North America.” Later in that same volume, in the article New York (listed under Y for York), the correctly named “United States of America” is mentioned. The Encyclopedia Britannica fourth edition was begun in 1800 and completed in 1810, comprising 20 volumes with 16,033 pages and 581 plates engraved by Andrew Bell. As with the third edition, in which title pages were not printed until the set was complete, and all volumes were given title pages dated 1797, title pages for the fourth edition were sent to bookbinders in 1810, dated that year for all volumes. The editor was James Millar, a physician, who was good at scientific topics but criticized for being “slow & dilatory & not well qualified”. The mathematical articles of Prof. Wallace were widely praised in the fourth edition. Overall, the fourth edition was a mild expansion of the third, from 18 to 20 volumes, and was updated in its historical, scientific, and biographical articles. . ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA-11TH & 12TH EDITIONS-All 32 Volumes-Reference Books-DVD
You are about to purchase the ELEVENTH & TWELFTH Editions (All 32 Volumes) of The Encyclopedia Britannica on DVD disk. This PDF eBook version contains over 25,000 pages and is a great value! (This is NOT an audio CD) This scan is superior to others on eBay due to its clarity, and it is also searchable and copy/pastable for easy navigation. Shipping is FREE. Not sure what an “eBook” is? See a thorough description at the end of this page. The Encyclopædia Britannica 11th edition (1910) brought a change in both plan and method of the Encyclopædia Britannica. Previous editions had consistently planned to provide comprehensive treatises on major subjects as well as detailed information on particulars and had inevitably lacked coherence because of the method of printing, whereby they appeared in parts over a considerable period of time. The 11th edition revived the practice of the third edition of dedication to the king and added to the name of George V that of William Howard Taft, president of the United States; this dual dedication thereafter became standard. Each volume contained not a select list of articles with authors (as in the ninth and 10th editions) but a key to the abbreviated symbols indicating the authors writing in that volume, together with the titles of articles signed by them, and a list of the principal unsigned articles. In addition, at the end of the 29th volume there was a complete list of authors followed by their symbols and the chief articles they had written. The index occupied most of the 29th volume. There was not a separate atlas, the maps being distributed throughout the volumes on plates or folding papers. Twelfth edition Edited by Hugh Chisholm in London and by Franklin Hooper in New York, three new volumes appeared in 1922. The new volumes were numbered 30–32, to follow on from the reprinted 11th edition, which together with them forms the 12th edition. The index to and contributors’ list for the three volumes were at the end of volume 32. The edition provided “an international stock-taking, by carefully selected authorities, of the march of events all over the world from 1909–10 to 1920–21, and of the nature and critical value of such advances as were made in the principal branches of knowledge during that period.” The list of contributors was broadened by the inclusion of statesmen such as Tomáš Masaryk (“Czechoslovakia”). There were frequent references to volumes and pages of the 11th edition, but the 12th edition was also intended to stand alone as a work of reference to the 12 years from 1910 to 1921. The publisher was William J. Cox, Hooper’s brother-in-law, who, together with Hooper’s widow, bought back the ownership of the encyclopaedia from Sears, Roebuck and Co. in 1923.
